Procedure and Incisions
Abdominal Incisions
The first incision made should be used with a scalpel and should be done very carefully because the muscles of the fetal pig are thin, and you want to avoid penetrating any organs or cavities. The incision to open the abdominal cavity should run along the lower edge of the ribs. After the incision with the scalpel has been made the rest of the opening of the abdominal cavity should be made with scissors. With the scissors, cut caudally to the umbilical cord and then around it ( both sides ). Then, make two lateral incisions in the body wall and through the peritoneum until the body cavity is reached. When cutting with the scissors, try to cut only through the parietal peritoneum, which is the shinny transparent material and no deeper. This is important to maintain throughout the incision process to limit the damage to internal organs.
The diagram and videos below should help while making your incisions in the abdominal cavity to explore the digestive system and locate the important organs and their parts that work together during digestion.

Opening the Abdominal Cavity
The section around the umbilical cord may be tough to fold back when opening the abdominal cavity. To make things easier, you can cut the umbilical vein which extends into the liver.
